1 Project Overview, Three Zones
Left Arm, Root and Treasure Bed 8 ft x 3 ft

The left arm is the deep-root zone, sized for crops that need vertical soil and full sun.

  • Yukon Gold potatoes, early, high yield.
  • Adirondack Blue potatoes, antioxidant-rich.
  • French Breakfast radishes, 25-day harvest.
  • Gold Rush zucchini, front exterior corner.
AREA 24 sq ft · full sun exposure · root-depth critical
Primary Spine, Verticality and Salad 12 ft x 3 ft

The spine is the long run of the U and carries the trellis. Orient it North so the trellis wall does not shade the rest of the bed.

  • Patio Snacker cucumbers, on the 8 ft trellis.
  • Bush Delicata squash, compact mounding.
  • Red Sails lettuce, heat-tolerant, slow-bolt.
  • Cosmic Purple carrots, high sugar content.
AREA 36 sq ft · north-facing trellis wall · spine orientation
Right Arm, Scent, Sauce and Squash 8 ft x 3 ft

The right arm is the warm, aromatic zone for tomatoes and Mediterranean herbs. Watch afternoon sun here.

  • Celebrity tomatoes (x3), disease-resistant.
  • Patio Choice Yellow tomatoes, micro-cherry.
  • German Extra Hardy garlic, back-right corner.
  • Hidcote lavender plus Tuscan Blue rosemary.
  • Common chives, exterior border.
AREA 24 sq ft · monitor afternoon sun · herbs need 6+ hrs
Zone 6a Rosemary Warning Hardiness note

Tuscan Blue rosemary is borderline hardy in Litchfield County. Consider substituting Arp or Salem rosemary varieties, which survive deeper freeze events. If staying with Tuscan Blue, plant in the most sheltered corner and mulch heavily after first frost.

2 Wall Height Options
Wall Height Tradeoff Analysis 20 in recommended

Four height options were weighed against soil depth, lumber cost, and the potato plus carrot plus squash mix in this bed. 20 inches is the recommended choice.

12 IN 2x 2x6, ~10 in soil. Least lumber and lowest cost, easy to source. Too shallow for potatoes and dries out fast. Best for lettuce and herbs only.
16 IN 3x 2x6 trimmed or 2x8, ~14 in soil. Adequate for most vegetables and good economy. Marginal for full potato depth and needs non-standard cuts. Best for mixed vegetable beds.
20 IN, RECOMMENDED 4x 2x6, ~17-18 in soil. Ideal potato hilling depth, excellent moisture retention, ergonomic working height, Hugel base fits perfectly. More lumber and heavier initial fill. Best for potatoes, squash, deep-rooting crops, long-term build.
24 IN 4x 2x6, ~22 in soil. Maximum root depth and best ergonomics. Significantly more fill volume (about +25%) and added lumber cost. Best for accessibility-priority builds only.

Your plan specifies 20 in height, the optimal choice for this bed. The 8 in Hugel base layer plus about 12 in of quality soil mix creates an ideal growing environment.

3 Material Specifications
Western Red Cedar 2x6, Structural Lumber $420-540 estimated
12-FT BOARDS 12 needed
8-FT BOARDS 16 needed
5-FT BOARDS 8 needed (cut from 10-ft)
3-FT BOARDS 12 needed (cut from 6-ft)
4x4 POSTS 8 cut to 20 in segments
GRADE No.2 or better, Clear Heart preferred

Where to buy: Litchfield Lumber, Torrington Home Depot, or Lowe's Winsted. Order ahead, 12-ft cedar sells out fast in spring. Ask for tight grain boards.

AVOID Pressure-treated lumber labeled ACQ or CCA, the copper and arsenic compounds leach into food soil. Also avoid untreated pine or spruce, they rot within 2-3 seasons. Do not substitute cedar-look fence boards, they are thin and will warp.
Premium Garden Mix Soil, Planting Medium $275-360 delivered
VOLUME 5.5-6 cubic yards
COMPOSITION 40% compost, 40% topsoil, 20% perlite
TARGET PH 6.2-6.8
HUGEL BASE 8 in Norway Maple logs first

Where to buy: Torrington Agway, or Nutmeg Landscaping Supply for bulk delivery. Request a soil analysis certificate. Specify vegetable-grade or food garden mix.

AVOID Cheap garden soil bags from box stores, they are mostly peat and compress into a dense brick by August. Never use straight topsoil alone, it becomes hydrophobic. Avoid any mix containing biosolids (sewage sludge) for food crops.
Fasteners and Rodent Protection, Hardware $95-130 total
STAR SCREWS 350 ct, 3.5 in stainless
HARDWARE CLOTH 1/4 in galvanized, base liner
STAPLE GUN heavy-duty, 1/2 in staples
COVERAGE ~14 ft x 10 ft footprint area

Where to buy: GRK or FastenMaster stainless star-drive screws at Home Depot or Amazon. Hardware cloth at Tractor Supply Co, Torrington location.

AVOID Standard zinc or galvanized screws, they corrode and stain the cedar within 2 years and heads strip during disassembly. Do not use chicken wire as a rodent barrier, the 1 in openings are too large and voles will walk right through.
River Rock and Pea Gravel, Drainage and Pathways $110-160 delivered
RIVER ROCK 1.5 cu yd, 12 in mower strip
PEA GRAVEL 0.5 cu yd, interior path
WEED FABRIC DeWitt Pro-5, heavy duty
ROCK SIZE 1.5-2 in for mower strip

Where to buy: Nutmeg Landscaping Supply, Goshen Sand and Gravel, or West Cornwall Stone. Can often be combined into one delivery with soil to reduce trucking cost.

AVOID Colored or dyed decorative rock, dyes can leach. Avoid plain landscape fabric under rock without the DeWitt Pro-5 or equivalent, standard fabric tears and lets weeds through in 2 seasons in CT.
Cattle Panel Trellis, Vertical Structure $55-85 per panel
WIDTH 8 ft, centered on spine
HEIGHT 5-6 ft above bed wall
MATERIAL 16-gauge galvanized steel
MOUNTING attach to north spine posts

Where to buy: Tractor Supply Co, Torrington, stocks 50 in cattle panels. For a taller option, Grower's Supply online sells garden arches and heavy panel sections.

AVOID Lightweight plastic or thin wire trellis, a full load of cucumbers plus squash in a July wind storm will tear it down. Bamboo stakes alone are not sufficient for the weight. Go steel from the start.
30 Mil HDPE Interior Liner, Cedar Protection $45-70 roll
THICKNESS 30 mil minimum
APPLICATION interior wall faces only
FOOD SAFE HDPE, not PVC
LIFESPAN BOOST adds 5-8 years to cedar

Where to buy: Amazon, Bootstrap Farmer, or Grower's Supply. Search HDPE raised bed liner roll. Cut to fit wall faces and secure with stainless staples.

AVOID PVC pond liner, it off-gasses plasticizers that are not food-safe. Do not use black plastic sheeting, it is too thin and tears within one season. Avoid lining the base, drainage must remain open.
4 Volume and Quantity Calculations
The Math Behind Your Material Order Verify before ordering

Working quantities for the U-bed. Round up on all bulk materials, a second in-season delivery costs more than ordering slightly extra upfront.

TOTAL BED VOLUME, GROSS Left arm 8 x 3 x 1.67 ft = 40 cu ft. Spine 12 x 3 x 1.67 ft = 60 cu ft. Right arm 8 x 3 x 1.67 ft = 40 cu ft. Less overlap corners -6 cu ft. About 134 cu ft gross.
HUGEL BASE DEDUCTION 8 in base = 0.67 ft depth. 134 x (8/20) = 53.6 cu ft filled with logs and branches. Soil volume needed about 80 cu ft.
SOIL ORDER 80 cu ft / 27 = 2.96 cu yd base, plus 15% settlement buffer plus 15% compaction factor. Order 5.5-6.0 cu yards.
MOWER STRIP, RIVER ROCK Perimeter about 44 linear ft. Strip 12 in wide x 3 in deep. 44 x 1 ft x 0.25 ft = 11 cu ft, about 0.4 cu yd. Order 1.5 cu yd buffered.
INTERIOR PATH, PEA GRAVEL Path 6 ft x 5 ft x 2 in = 5 cu ft, 0.18 cu yd. Order 0.5 cu yd, round up.
HARDWARE CLOTH, BASE U-footprint 14 ft x 10 ft, less interior path void about 8 sq ft, net coverage about 112 sq ft. Order a 50 ft x 3 ft roll, 150 sq ft, covers all.
ORDERING TIP Soil compacts 10-15% after watering and settling. If the supplier sells in half-yard increments, order 6 yards even, the buffer will be appreciated come July top-dressing.

08 Installation, Order of Operations
Prep, weekday evening Site Assessment and Layout Staking 30-45 min, April 7 or 8
1.
Walk the garden bed site and confirm solar orientation. The spine must face North. Stake out the full 14 ft x 10 ft footprint with batter boards and mason's line. Check for any underground utilities, call CT Dig Safe at 811. Identify the grade, you may need to level a corner. This is the one step you can do on a weekday evening, get it done before the weekend so you hit the ground running Saturday morning.
30-45 min
Weekend 01 of 05 Shed Dig, Stump Grind, Mower Trench April 12-13
1.
Dig the shed foundation and grind the stump on Saturday April 12, all day. Save all stump grindings, wood chips, and large root sections, they go directly into the Hugel base layer as slow-decomposing biomass and reduce how much Norway Maple you need to source. Pile grindings near the garden bed footprint, you will need them the following weekend. Caution: after extended rain through early April the soil will still be saturated, confirm the footprint drains before digging and give it one more dry day if standing water is present.
Sat, all day
2.
Dig the 12 in wide mower strip trench around the bed perimeter to 3-4 in deep on Sunday April 13 morning. This defines the outer edge of the footprint and creates a clean boundary. Remove all grass and roots from inside the footprint. Lighter work that sets up the following weekend's frame build.
Sun, morning
Weekend 02 of 05 Frame Build, Liner, Path April 19-20
1.
Cut all boards to final length using the cut list on Saturday April 19 morning. Lay out all pieces in position on the ground for a dry fit, no screws yet. Confirm all corners are square with the 3-4-5 method and the U-shape dimensions are correct before fastening. Cut everything before you screw anything. Rent the miter saw for Saturday morning only, cuts should take 2-3 hours, then return it.
Sat AM
2.
Set the 20 in 4x4 corner and mid-span posts at all structural positions Saturday afternoon. Verify plumb on each post before fastening. Attach the bottom two layers of 2x6 around the full U perimeter, pre-drilling and driving 3.5 in stainless screws into the posts. Check level after every course. A second person makes a real difference, one holds boards, the other drives screws.
Sat PM
3.
Staple 1/4 in galvanized hardware cloth flat across the entire interior base Sunday April 20 morning, overlapping seams by 6 in. Apply 30 mil HDPE liner to all interior wall faces, securing with a cedar cap strip along the top edge. Add courses 3 and 4 to complete the 20 in wall height. Confirm square by measuring both diagonals. Do not line the base with HDPE, drainage must stay open through the hardware cloth, HDPE goes on the wall faces only.
Sun AM
4.
Lay DeWitt Pro-5 fabric in the mower strip trench Sunday afternoon, pinning edges under the cedar wall base. Fill the trench with 1.5 in river rock to grade. Lay fabric in the interior path and fill with pea gravel. Schedule bulk rock delivery for Saturday April 19 morning so it is on-site and ready.
Sun PM
Weekend 03 of 05 Hugel Base and Soil Fill April 26-27
1.
Fill the bottom 8 in of the entire U bed with Norway Maple logs, branches, stump grindings, and woody debris on Saturday April 26 morning. Pack densely, the stump grindings from April 12 mix well with larger log sections to fill void space. Wet the log layer thoroughly before adding soil, dry wood steals moisture from plants in year one.
Sat AM
2.
Add the full 5.5-6 cu yards of premium garden mix on top of the Hugel base, Saturday afternoon through Sunday April 27. Schedule bulk soil delivery for Saturday morning. Fill in stages, add 2/3 of the soil Saturday, water thoroughly, let settle overnight, then add the remainder and set GrowOya irrigation pods Sunday morning. This is the most physically demanding step, budget 3-4 hours of wheelbarrow loads across both days, help on Saturday is worth it.
Sat PM + Sun
Settling period Soil Settling April 28 to May 9
1.
Let the filled bed settle for 2 weeks. Water every 2-3 days to accelerate compaction and expose any low spots. Top-dress with remaining soil if needed. No action required during the work week, just water when you get home. Check the GrowOya fill necks after the first week, they may have settled below grade and need repositioning before planting.
2 weeks
Weekend 04 of 05 Initial Planting, Cold Crops Saturday May 10
1.
Direct-sow or transplant potatoes in the left arm at 12 in spacing, French Breakfast radishes on the left arm interior edge, Cosmic Purple carrots on the spine, and Red Sails lettuce on the spine. Soil should be at least 45 F at 4 in depth before planting potatoes. May 10 is well within the cold crop window for Zone 6a, potatoes, carrots, and radishes planted now yield fully, harvest simply runs a few weeks later into fall with no meaningful loss.
Sat
Weekend 05 of 05 Trellis and Warm-Season Planting May 17 or 18
1.
Anchor the 8 ft cattle panel trellis to the North spine wall posts. Transplant Celebrity and Patio Yellow tomatoes in the right arm and stake immediately. Transplant Patio Snacker cucumbers and Bush Delicata squash on the spine. Install Gold Rush zucchini in the left arm front corner. Soil must be 60 F or above for all warm-season transplants. Last frost in Litchfield County is typically May 10-20, do not put tomatoes out before May 15 and keep row cover on standby through Memorial Day. If May 17-18 has a frost warning, hold one more week, the plants are better off hardening in the nursery than getting frosted in the bed.
Sat or Sun
Fall task Garlic Fall Planting October 4 or 5
1.
After clearing the back-right corner of the right arm, plant German Extra Hardy garlic cloves at 6 in spacing, 2 in deep, pointed end up. Mulch immediately with 3 in of straw. The early October window gives cloves 3-4 more weeks of root development before the Litchfield hills freeze hard. A 1-hour job on a fall Saturday, mark the area with a labeled stake, it will look bare all winter but will be the first thing sprouting next April.
